Green smoothies….the thought used to make me cringe.
“It’s good!” they said…
“I promise you’ll like it” they insisted…
“You can’t even taste the spinach/kale/beet-greens” they persuaded…
Well I called trumpery Every. Single. Time. And almost every time I was right.
Then I started making a whole lot of changes in my life and diet to work on healing my gut, increasing energy levels and taking the reigns back on my mental health. I started experimenting with different types of recipes. Paleo, gluten free, dairy free, non-GMO, local, organic, Young Living Essential Oils, chemical free home and the list goes on. Some things made me feel WAY better and some made no difference at all. But one of the things I was determined to figure out was this whole green-smoothie-that-actually-tastes-good thing. And I am happy to report that I absolutely have!
Kid Approved Green Smoothie
(and husband approved)
The key component that makes this smoothie delicious with no added sugar and off the charts antioxidant power is NingXia Red There’s so much to say about this supplement drink that a blog post dedicated to just that is coming. But for now I will give you the highlights.
NingXia Red is a supplement drink containing wolfberry puree, superfruit extract and a synergistic blend of orange, lemon, tangerine and yuzu essential oils. The wolfberry is pureed so that the nutrients from the WHOLE fruit are captured. Juice, pulp, peel, seeds and fruit. The citrus essential oils contain essential nutrients such as beta-carotene, lycopene and D-limonene. Wolfberries are also known as gogi berries and have been used in chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Young Living has selectively sourced their berries from an area in northwest China known as NingXia.
This supplement is a whole body infusion of nutrients that have been carefully curated and cultivated. Young Living is dedicated to putting only the best, most nutrient-filled products into your hands. Have a look at their Seed to Seal promise. Sourcing, Science and Standards far beyond the standard.
The next key ingredient is the greens! You can’t have a green healthy kids smoothie without some sort of greens. The greens you choose to use are up to you. I switch mine up depending on the season and what I already have in my fridge. In the winter months when there is no fresh farmers market greens I go with Organic Spinach from Costco. If you are worried about going through all of that spinach it freezes really well…as long as you are planning to use it for smoothies or dips. Thawing it for a salad is a no-go.
The Milk….or Mylk
Another important ingredient, for me at least, is the almond milk. The dairy free thing is one that makes me feel WAY better. I personally am not a fan of almond milk from the store and thus make my own. I promise it is way easier than you think. All you need is almonds, water, salt, a good blender (I LOVE my Blendtec…also from Costco) and something to strain with. I honestly went to a fabric store and bought a tiny piece of plain sheer material and use that.
But when I make this for my husband or just the kids I use regular milk and even throw in 1/2 cup of plain yogurt to boost the protein and creaminess.
From here you can play around with the fruits. We do more berries in the summer but they will make your smoothie a muddy brown colour. Not nearly as much fun but delicious nonetheless.
Here are today’s comments:
From the 1 year old who’s sick and won’t eat…
*whines at my feet until I let him have some of mine.
tries to steal my cup.
screams at me when I take it away to pour him his own cup.
From the not picky 3-year old…
“Mooooom, I’m done.”
She says to me by the time I’ve poured my cup, rinsed the blender, and had 2 sips.
From the husband who eats maybe 25% of his daily vegetable requirements…
*takes a sip of mine*
“That is SOOO good! I want one. I need lunch. Can you make me one?”
If those comments, along with my years of skepticism doesn’t convince you to try making this, nothing will.
Leave me a comment and let me know how much you loved it!
